We all know that too much sugar is not good for our bodies. Not only does excess sugar complicate such conditions as diabetes and ADHD, it also can cause cancer and a whole host of other health issues including obesity which might we add, 3 in 4 Americans are currently obese.
But what about acne? People with acne have claimed for some time now (especially those with acne) that sugar does cause their acne to flare up. Are they wrong? Dermatologists have said for years that sugar has nothing to do with acne. Well, they are partially right.
While sugar does not cause acne, it is a link in the acne chain. Just because someone eats sugar and their acne does not flare up does not mean that is not a factor. Just like a person can smoke for their entire life and not develop cancer, or eat meat all the days of their lives and never develop heart disease, does not mean meat cannot affect any of those conditions.
In truth and reality, while sugar does not cause acne, too much sugar in the body is detrimental because the body cannot deal with it. Thus it is turned into long fatty molecules and either stored as fat or is expelled. If the liver cannot help with this process due to the fact that is has secreted too many harmonies, the body goes into emergency mode and tries to expel some of them through the skin.
So to answer the question, yes, sugar is a factor in acne, however it is not the cause and is not the only factor. There are many other factors that should be taken into consideration when trying to determine how to treat the condition.
